Have you ever wondered about all those bugs getting eletrocuted every summer night in the purple "bug zappers" hanging in the backyard? You can hear the "zzzt, zzzzt, zzzzt" of the bugs flying to their death. Are they deaf not to hear the bugs before them getting zapped, or blind not to see all the dead insects that have fallen around the light? Is the light so beautiful that they can't resist it? Does every bug think he is stronger than the others and more able to avoid the danger? But in the end, he winds up dead like all the other bugs.
Regardless, all bugs that have gone before him prove that it just doesn't work that way. The more he is around the light, the closer he wants to get it, until he finally gets too close and is shocked to death.
Even though we think those bugs are so stupid, we are a lot like that. We too, can hear all the warnings and see all the negative results of other people's sin, but that won't always keep us away from things that tempt us.
Read James 1 : 13 - 16.
Such desires attract us, just as bug lights attract insects, but we too often think that we're different from everything else and can handle the temptations that cause others to sin. Or we say, "I can quit anytime I want to." Yet every person who has lived before us is proof that it just doesn't work that way. We flirt with our temptations, edging closer and closer, until we give in and make a sinful choice. God has given us plenty of warning signs. Will you pay attention to them or ignore them? Will you be determined or deceived?
